JPR:

First if I can have you do your introduction, please.

自己紹介お願いします。

Yui:

My name is Yui Yokoyama, and I am the General Manger of AKB48. I’m from Kyoto, and I’m 25 years old.

AKB48グループ総監督の横山由依です。京都府出身の25歳です。

JPR:

What does it mean to be the General Manager of AKB48?

総監督というポジションに付かれるのはご自身にとってどういう意味がありますか？

Yui:

I love this group, so I’ve always wanted to support them in some way. Minami Takahashi asked me if I could be the General Manager, so I said yes to that, and that’s how I became the General Manager.

AKB48グループのことがすごく好きなので、何らかの形で力になりたいとずっと思っていて、その時に初代総監督の高橋みなみさんが卒業される際、「総監督をやってくれないか」、と言われたので、「はい」と答えて引き受けることにしました。

JPR:

What is your number one charm point as an idol?

アイドルとして一番のチャームポイントは？

Yui:

Hmmm… I wonder. Since I’m from Kyoto, many people tell me that I’m laid-back and relaxed. So, I think that’s my charm point.

京都出身で、ゆったりしてると言われることが多いので、そこが自分の魅力かなと思います。

JPR: Of the AKB48 singles, which one is your favorite?

AKB48のシングルの中で一番のお気に入りの曲は？

Yui:

I like our single “Gingham Check”.

「ギンガムチェック」という曲が好きです。

JPR:

Is there any American song that you particularly like?

好きな洋楽・アメリカの曲はありますか？

Background:

For example, Taylor Swift or Bruno Mars?

例えば、Taylor Swiftとか、Bruno Marsとか。

Yui:

Songs from America… I listen to Avril Lavine. Also, if we’re talking about foreign songs, I listen to the soundtrack from the Greatest Showman. It was a great movie.

洋楽はAvril Lavineを聞いたりします。あとは、海外の曲で言うと、『Greatest Showman』のサウンドトラックを聞いています。とても素敵な映画でした。

JPR:

Oh, I liked that movie too! I know all the songs.

あー、私もその映画好きです。全曲知っています。

Yui:

Oh, really? The opening was great, wasn’t it? Yes, I listen to that soundtrack.

あー、本当ですか！オープニング、すごかったですよね！それを聞いたりとかはしています。

JPR:

Do you like Hugh Jackman or Zac Efron better?

ヒュージャックマンとザックエフロンの歌、どっちの方がいい？

Yui:

Ahhhh, Zac Efron! He’s a good looking man. I watched High School Musical too, but I think he is even better now! He’s grown up!

私はザックエフロンです！男前で、すごくかっこいいですよね！「ハイスクールミュージカル」も観ました。でも、その時より今の方が大人になっていて素敵です。

JPR:

“Rewrite the stars” was a good song.

Rewrite the Starsはいいよね。

What is the biggest message that you wish to convey as a member of AKB48?

AKB48として一番伝えたいメッセージは何ですか？

Yui:

What I recently think about as a group is… we hope to be present in our fans’ every day lives. For example, if they listen to our music during the commute, or maybe they look forward to the meet-ups, or look forward to our live performances. I hope we can be a group that can support our fans in that way.

Also, if fans can think, “Yes, I can do it from tomorrow again!” after seeing us… or hopefully they think, “I want to have this kind of dream”. I want our fans to be able to dream and have hope through our group.

最近思うのは、グループとして活動している時に、やっぱりファンの皆さんの日常に存在できていたら嬉しいなと思っています。毎日AKB48の音楽を聴きながら通勤したり、握手会で会えるのを楽しみに毎日過ごしていただけたり、劇場公演やコンサートが楽しみになっていたりとか。そういうファンの方の毎日に寄り添えるグループであれたらいいな、と思っています。

あとは私たちの活動を見て、明日から頑張ろうとか、こういう夢を持っていきたいなーとか思ってもらえるような、夢とか希望をみなさんに感じてもらえるようなグループになれればいいなと思います。

JPR:

Yui:

Yes, we’ll do our best!

JPR:

If you could describe to me your strengths and weaknesses. Three words each.

長所と短所を表すとすれば？

Yui:

Positive. I can sleep anywhere… and…. I like to talk to people. I would say those are my strengths. My weaknesses are… I think a bit too much. I mean, I forget when I sleep, but I tend to think a bit too much….

どこでも寝れるところと、人とお話しをするのが好きなところが長所だと思います。短所は、ちょっと考えすぎちゃうところです。でも、寝たら忘れるんですけどね！

JPR:

That’s good, you can sleep anywhere…

いいね、どこでも寝れる。

Yui:

Yes! I can sleep anywhere, so I can forget things easily. But, I think about things a bit longer than usual. And, I talk too much.

そうなんです！あとは、話が長いところが短所です。

JPR:

That’s okay!

大丈夫、それは大丈夫。

Yui:

I’m trying to make my answers short and concise today. Just when I’m talking! One more weakness… I fall asleep without taking a shower sometimes. I fall asleep when I’m really tired, so I end up taking a shower in the morning. I regret it every time I take a shower in the morning. That’s my last weakness. I can’t fight off that sleepy feeling.

今日はできるだけ簡潔にしようと思っています。あとは、夜疲れてお風呂に入らずに寝ちゃって、朝にお風呂に入ったりして後悔するので、それが短所ですね。眠気には勝てないです。

JPR:

You have a lot of pictures of your cat. Bisu? What is your favorite trait about Bisu?

たくさん猫の写真を持ってますよね。ビス？ビスの一番好きなところは？

Yui:

Oh, I love everything about her! She comes to greet me at the door when I get home. She sleeps with me, and… she’s fluffy! I love that she’s fluffy. What else… I can hug her tight, and she comes to me when I need her. She’s very friendly. So those are the things I love about her.

はい、全部好きです！家に帰ると、玄関まで来てくれたり、寝てる時も一緒に寝てくれますし、あとは、ふわふわなところ！ぎゅっとしてもいいし、来てほしい時には来てくれるし、人懐っこいところも好きです。

JPR:

You have a lot of pictures on Instagram

インスタグラム、写真たくさんありますね。

Yui:

Yes! Did you see my Instagram?

そうです！見てくださったんですか？

JPR:

Yes.

はい。

Yui:

I’m so happy! I’ll post it on Instagram again. I hope you take a look at it again.

あー、嬉しい！またインスタに載せますね。見て下さい！

JPR:

If you had to eat the same thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

一生同じものを食べ続けなければならなかったら、何を食べますか？

Yui:

What!? Gyoza. I love gyoza. And, if it’s gyoza, the outer part is made from flour, and the filling is meat and vegetables. I’d be able to get my nutrition. So, I’ll have gyoza.

餃子です！大好きなんですよ。しかも、餃子なら、皮の部分は小麦粉でできていて、中の具はお肉と野菜が入ってるから栄養も取れると思う。餃子にします。

JPR:

Gyoza is delicious

餃子はおいしいですね。

Yui:

Do you like gyoza?

好きですか？

JPR:

I like gyoza!

餃子好きですね。

Yui:

Oh, really! Same! Eating with ponzu is my recommendation.

あっ、一緒ですね。ポン酢で食べるのがおすすめです。

JPR:

I already do that!

一緒！

Yui:

What, same!? Eating with Sugosho is also good. It’s vinegar and pepper. Please try.

あー一緒！酢胡椒という、お酢と胡椒もおいしいですよ。やってみてください。

JPR:

If you could pick one member to be stranded on an island with, who would it be?

メンバーもう一人と無人島で孤立するとしたら、誰ですか？

Yui:

Uhhhh, I don’t know! Just one, right? Mako Kojima. She’s very bright. I feel like you’d feel down if you’re stranded on an island, but she’s always smiling…

うわ、どうしよう。一人ですよね。チームKの小嶋真子ちゃん。すごい明るいので、無人島に取り残されたら気分が暗くなっちゃいそうですけど。小嶋真子ちゃんはどんな時も笑顔だから選びました。

JPR:

She’s very positive.

すごいポジティブ。

Yui:

Yes, positive. So, she’d probably complain, “Why are we stranded on an island?” but in a bright and positive way. So, I’ll choose her.

いつもポジティブで、「なんで取り残されたの？」ってことも明るく言ってくれそうなので、小嶋真子ちゃんにします。

JPR:

What is the most important trait to have as a member of AKB48?

AKB48のメンバーとして一番大切な特性というか、性格は？

Yui:

dream

夢。

JPR:

dream?

夢？

Yui:

Even if there’s something difficult, I think we can keep on going if you know that you’re going towards your dream. If you don’t have a dream… what we do every day is to fulfill our dreams. All of the group members are trying to fulfill their dreams through AKB48, and our fans support us. I think that’s how AKB48 is formed. So… yes. Dream.

大変なことがあっても、夢に向かっていると思えば頑張れると思います。自分の夢を叶えるために活動することで、それをファンの方も応援してくださって、成り立つグループだと思うので。夢だと思います！

JPR:

Do you have a message for your fans around the world? And preferably, can you say it in English?

世界のファンへ向けて何かメッセージはありますか？できれば英語で！

Yui:

Hello. How are you? I’m fine… dream come true. Thank you.

Yui:

Hello to the fans around the world. My name is Yui Yokoyama. AKB48 has many different types of girls, so you’ll probably see someone you like, or maybe even think, “I want to be like her.” I’m sure you’ll want to support us once you see what we do. Our activity is mostly based in Akihabara, Japan, so please come and see us there! We’ll do our best to make our dreams come true!

I wanted to say all of that in English…

世界の皆さん。初めまして、横山由依です。AKB48は、いろんな女の子がいるので、一回見て頂いたら、この子がいいなーとか、この子になりたいとか、応援したいって思って頂けると思うので、日本の秋葉原を拠点に活動しているので、良かったら会いに来てください。夢を叶えるために頑張ります。
